How to Reduce Humidity in Your Home

Humidity in your home can cause you to feel uncomfortable and makes your skin clammy. Often you can even smell mildew in the air as well as mould in certain places. Humidity has a negative effect on one’s health and will even affect your sleep. Mould can develop in 1-2 days, so it is imperative that you sort out humidity in your home before it gets worse. Except for mould, signs of humidity in your home can also include damp spots and rotting wood.

You don’t have to wait for your home to develop tell-tale signs, if you feel your home is humid then it is wise to take the proper measures to treat this problem. Research shows that your moods are directly related to the humidity level of the place you’re in. Simple and relatively low-cost measures can reduce humidity levels, if it is not that severe.

Ways to reduce humidity levels

Below is a short list of ways that you can reduce humidity levels in your home. There are many more ways which are not mentioned here.

  1. It is important to ventilate your home properly, especially in places that easily become mouldy such as the kitchen and bathroom. If there is inadequate ventilation, get an electrician to make a few. Check your home thoroughly for mould spots which are often found in the sink, shower, bathtub, or windows.
  2. You may not be aware of this, but the amount of people in the home influences the humidity levels in the home.
  3. You may want to consider taking shorter showers that are cooler, if you are serious about lowering the humidity levels.
  4. It will help to have an air conditioning system, although this may not be feasible for most people.
  5. Try to leave your plants outside for a period of time as they emit moisture vapour which can increase the humidity.
  6. Get rid of carpets as they retain moisture and house dust mites.
  7. Basement walls that are made of concrete can contribute significantly to moisture and thus mould in your home.
  8. You should consider installing a slump or French drain to reduce moisture that comes from your basement.
  9. Odours are an obvious sign of mould and humidity in your home. Even if you are unable to locate the mould, yet you can smell mildew, you should treat your home. In many cases mould is often found hidden under carpets or behind wallpaper.
  10. Humidity can cause allergies which can take a toll on your health.
  11. Choose to dry your washing outdoors instead of inside your home.
  12. Don’t forget to open your windows and allow natural air to fill your home.
  13. You may choose to use charcoal to help with moisture, by filling a basket or bowl with coal and leaving it somewhere in your home. Coal has great absorption properties.

You should strive to reach a humidity level of 60% or less in summer and between 25-40% in winter and you don’t need a dehumidifier to achieve this.
